“Global dimension and sustainability of research infrastructures”

Oct 12, 2023

ERINHA participated in European research infrastructures events hosted in Tenerife under the auspices of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union:  the high-level conference on Research Infrastructures “Global dimension and sustainability of research infrastructures”, held from 25 to 26 September, and the 2nd ESFRI Stakeholders Forum Meetup, held on 27 September.

The high-level conference on Research Infrastructures brought together main European and international actors in the Research Infrastructures scene. The discussions were structured around 2 axes:

  • Sustainability challenges of Research Infrastructures, including resilience
  • Global dimension of Research Infrastructures

Following the two-day event, the Tenerife Declaration on “Global Dimension and Sustainability of Research Infrastructures” was adopted by the EC and Member States. It calls for concrete actions to ensure long-term sustainability of RIs, to foster career and skills development in R&I, to advance implementation of Open Science policies, to assess current challenges in the environment with an impact on RIs, to enhance international cooperation and foster the role of RIs in advancing science diplomacy.

The full text of the Tenerife Declaration can be found here.

The 2nd ESFRI Stakeholders Forum discussions mainly focused on three key areas for RIs: Funding, Access, Industry and interaction with Technology Infrastructures (TIs). ERINHA participated in interactive discussions aiming at gathering feedback from RIs and other stakeholders on future developments regarding funding mechanisms, access provision by RIs, as well as interactions with industry.

Both policy events are of key importance for ERINHA as they frame the future policies and funding opportunities in the field of RIs and access provision.
