ERINHA (European Research Infrastructure on Highly Pathogenic Agents) spearheads the EU-funded NAVIPP (New AntiVirals for Infections with Pandemic Potential) project, an ambitious endeavour aimed at fortifying the European Union’s preparedness and response capabilities against viral threats with pandemic potential.
NAVIPP represents a collaborative effort among esteemed international research institutions, pharmaceutical entities, and public health organizations. At its core, NAVIPP seeks to establish an international platform dedicated to the development of broad spectrum antiviral drugs targeting pathogens with pandemic potential. This groundbreaking initiative is set to pave the way for a multi-faceted strategic research and development (R&D) roadmap, focusing on the identification, optimization, investigation, and validation of broad-spectrum antivirals.
Under the expert coordination of ERINHA, NAVIPP will prioritize viruses both outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO) but also of specific EU interest as defined by the Health European preparedness and Response Authority (HERA). Leveraging an extensive compound library and state-of-the-art facilities for high-throughput screening, high containment, and clinical research, NAVIPP will accelerate the discovery and development of novel antiviral agents.
Dr. Audrey S Richard, Project Coordinator for NAVIPP, expressed her enthusiasm about the project’s expected impact: « The NAVIPP project gathers an amazing team of experts from the academic and private sectors and will deploy an impressive pipeline supporting antiviral hit discovery to early clinical investigation. ERINHA is very proud to be leading this consortium and we are looking forward to seeing all the great science that will be produced for better pandemic preparedness in the EU. »
NAVIPP underscores the EU’s commitment to proactive measures in addressing public health emergencies and reinforcing its position as a global leader in medical research and innovation. Through collaborative endeavors such as NAVIPP, ERINHA and its partners are poised to make significant strides in safeguarding public health on a global scale.
